Dolphins are non-human persons

This really IS a paradigm shift!  Dolphins have a complex language, each dolphin has a name, already 200 dolphin words have been deciphered, their brains are superior to those of great apes and now scientists in Vancouver have declared them officially to be ‘non-human persons’.  Forget aliens and such, we have non-human intelligent species right here on Earth.

Dolphins are so intelligent that they should be thought of as ‘non-human persons’ and given their own bill of rights, it is claimed.

A coalition of scientists, philosophers and animal welfare groups have come up with a declaration of dolphin rights which they hope will one day be enshrined in law.

This would stop them being kept in zoos and waterparks, and being attacked by fishermen.

Whales would also be elevated above other animals by the list of rules, leading to whalers being classed as murderers, the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s annual conference heard in Vancouver.

Whale watching trips would be subject to regulations which would respect the creatures’ privacy, and developers and oil companies would have to give huge consideration to the effect their projects would have on the animals’ life and culture.

AND THEY WATCH TELEVISION TOO…

  • Given the opportunity, dolphins will watch TV and follow instructions delivered on the screen. Chimps do this only after months of training.
  • Dolphins can be taught to understand human words, sentences and demands.
  • Like humans, dolphins are altruistic and there are examples of them going to the aid of swimmers and surfers attacked by sharks.
  • They use body language. The ‘side-flop’, jumping clear of the water and landing on their side, is thought to mean: ‘I want to go now.’
  • They have regional accents, with the whistles made by those off Wales different to those living off the Irish coast.
  • They have a form of adult onset diabetes but are able to turn it on and off. Learning how they do this could lead to new treatments for the human form of the condition.
  • Males woo females by presenting them with gifts from bouquets of weed to sticks and lumps of marine debris.

Philosopher Thomas White said: ‘Scientific evidence is now strong enough to support the claim that dolphins are, like humans, self-aware, intelligent beings with emotions and personalities.

‘Accordingly, dolphins should be regarded as “non-human persons” and valued as individuals. From an ethical perspective, the injury, deaths and captivity of dolphins are wrong.’

Those who drew up the bill of rights are known as the Helsinki Group and include UK members of the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society.

They say that thanks to advances in science, it is clear that dolphins are extremely intelligent, complex and sensitive mammals.

The bill of rights states that every individual member of the cetacean order – whales, dolphins and porpoises – has a right to life.

It also says that no one has the right to own the creatures or to do anything that undermines their rights, freedoms or norms.

Its authors are using the Vancouver conference to try to get more scientists and members of the public on their side. They believe this is a step towards eventually persuading governments to enshrine the principles in law.

When brain weight is compared with body weight, the dolphin has the second-largest brain on the planet after humans.

The conference heard that dolphins are self-aware – they can recognise themselves in the mirror.

There are also examples of them grieving for lost calves, feeding ailing pod mates and co-operating with fishermen when there is a meal in it for them.

In Laguna, Brazil, when a shoal of fish enters the lagoon, the dolphins herd it towards the fishermen. Any fish that escape their nets provide an easy meal.

At Dingle, south-west Ireland, a bottlenose nicknamed Fungi regularly entertains sightseers in boats.

Perhaps the most striking example of dolphin intelligence involves Kelly, a member of a pod at the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies in Mississippi which were rewarded with fish for clearing up litter from their pool.

Each piece of litter equated to one fish. To raise her intake of fish, Kelly tore the litter into pieces and presented them one by one.

One day, she caught a gull and was given a large haul of fish for her efforts.

She then started to use the fish she won for litter picking to lure gulls into her jaws.

She also taught the tactic to her calf, which passed it on to other youngsters in the pod.

Brilliant Noise

As I have said many times, our sun is the “game changer” for all life and DNA in our solar system. We are getting ready to go thru some pretty wild rides this year with the sun being in its “active cycle” for 2012. Already, we are having back to back M-class flares for the past three days. Below you will find an amazing piece of video work from a group called “Semiconductor”, the frequency of the sun’s plasma and solar discharge seems etherial and other-worldly… but it is not. This is the sound of OUR sun, in all of its glory!.. get to know her.

Brilliant Noise takes us into the data vaults of solar astronomy. After sifting through hundreds of thousands of computer files, made accessible via open access archives, Semiconductor have brought together some of the sun’s finest unseen moments. These images have been kept in their most raw form, revealing the energetic particles and solar wind as a rain of white noise.

This grainy black and white quality is routinely cleaned up by NASA, hiding the processes and mechanics in action behind the capturing procedure. Most of the imagery has been collected as single snapshots containing additional information, by satellites orbiting the Earth. They are then reorganised into their spectral groups to create time-lapse sequences. The soundtrack highlights the hidden forces at play upon the solar surface, by directly translating areas of intensity within the image brightness into layers of audio manipulation and radio frequencies.”

Food Sovereignty – Paradise Proposed

In the year 2012. As depicted in this video, a group of First Nations People in Saskatchewan Canada are reclaiming their Indigenous agricultural heritage, reconnecting with Nature, learning and observing her natural laws, and getting back on the road to self-reliance. Many thanks to Director Noah Erenberg for making this great documentary, presented here courtesy of Muskoday Organic Growers Co-op Ltd.

If you would like to know more about the Saskatchewan people, and the Manitoba communities, what they are doing, and what we can learn from them (as we should have done from the beginning) click here >http://www.onscreenmanitoba.com/videos

Their work to save our relationship to the Earth, Creator, and our plant world is as valuable as it gets. I am so greatful they are filming and educating us in this way, as we have lost our ability to “walk” and go to them.

They have NOT given up as many would assume. They are gaining ground in the film and documentary industry, using it wisely, and trying to help us all.

The Discovery Channel Sells Out -

Article From Change.org

The Discovery Channel is refusing to show the shocking conclusions of its own documentary.

“Frozen Planet” is a seven-part series that serves as a gripping portrait of life at the ends of the Earth, featuring stunning shots of wildlife at the North and South Poles.

But when the series airs in the U.S. early next year, Discovery Channel is only showing six episodes: they’re refusing to air the full seventh episode, which deals exclusively with climate change and exposing its devastating effects on our planet.

Claudia Abbott-Barish, an American now living in the UK, where “Frozen Planet” is currently airing, started a Change.org petition asking the Discovery Channel to air all seven episodes of “Frozen Planet” to make sure Americans can see the truth about climate change.

The striking footage of “Frozen Planet” is not to be missed — it features never-before-seen images of penguins, polar bears, glaciers, and the great grey owl. It’s an intimate look at the ice-covered portions of our planet, made by the same people who produced the incredible “Planet Earth” series from a few years ago. Throughout the series, viewers follow stories of animals trying to survive in extreme conditions.

But central to the story about life at the ends of the Earth is the reality of climate change.

Some of the show was shot by a cameraman named named Dave, a friend of Claudia’s. While filming in the Arctic and Antarctica, Dave said he was stunned by the experience. He saw shrinking glaciers and melting ice right before his eyes, all while working with scientists who talked about how the devastating effects of climate change are worse than they ever feared.

Discovery Channel prides itself on revealing the mysteries and unseen worlds of our planet. Claudia thinks that by shortchanging U.S. viewers of the reality of climate change, Discovery Channel is doing a disservice to its viewers and the planet.

Please sign Claudia’s petition asking Discovery Channel to air the seventh episode of “Frozen Planet” to tell the whole story about climate change and life at the ends of the Earth. Add your name here:

The Earth has a heartbeat we can see from space

Article from GEOPHYSICAL RESEARCH LETTERS

The Earth pulses with a special kind of resonant wave. The Schumann Resonance has long been dubbed ‘the Earth’s heartbeat,’ and it has only been spotted from below. Recently, though, satellites have found signs of this electromagnetic heartbeat leaking up into space.

The heartbeat of the earth goes at about eight cycles per second. Like many other heartbeats, it’s regulated by electricity. When lightning strikes the earth, it creates electromagnetic waves in the atmosphere. These waves are caught between the ground and the upper atmosphere, sixty miles up. Most of these waves are dampened and shake themselves to nothing.

Others, with just the right wavelength and frequency, just keep going. The wavelength is the circumference of the earth (or twice the circumference, or three times, or four, and so on). This means that the troughs of these waves will always line up, as will the crests. When crests combine, they get bigger. And with lightning hitting the earth over four million times a day, these waves keep getting the boosts they need. The waves don’t sweep across the surface of the earth. Instead they’re like standing waves, that just pulse at their troughs and crests – a resonant heartbeat. Scientists call this heartbeat The Schumann Resonance, and always thought it was confined to the earth. It had to be trapped under the blanket of the ionosphere.

In a paper in the online journal Geophysical Research Letters, NASA scientists working on the Goddard Space Flight Center have revealed that they have detected these waves five hundred miles up. It seems these waves are skipping, or leaking, through the boundaries of earth and out into space.

Key Points

  • Schumann resonances have been detected definitely in the ionosphere
  • Observations support a leaky cavity and call for revision of propagation models
  • Observations suggest remote sensing capability for investigating other planets
